10th Urban Studies Week

Lleida 2010

The 10th edition of the Urban Studies Week wants to become a forum where something as complex as the relationship between cities and creativities (in plural) can be discussed. A lot of literature has been produced in the preceding years about this close relationship.

The conference’s main objective is to focus on three main points. The first one is economy: it wants to explore the influence creativity has –and may have in following years- in the cities economy. Both the creation of new enterprises and the promotion of economic activities linked to culture have a big impact in local economies because of their larger added value to their economic structure.

The second main point wants to explore in which ways a city could be made more creative by using different techniques like the employment of creative urban procedures or the organisation and creation of cities. The main purpose of this point is to combine the analysis of singular cases with more general ideas like how the creative sector helps transforming the city or if it is possible to plan creativity within the city.

The third point wants to focus on the effects creative activities may have in social dynamics. From the use of public space as a temporal art exhibition space to the conversion of public space into a social cohesion factor.
